News and Recipes From the Farm

Good morning!

I hope that all of you had a wonderful weekend and I especially hope that all of the Dads had a great Father’s Day.  We had a very special Family Day (Father’s Day) here at the Berry Patch.  I don’t believe that I have ever seen so many happy children.  They rode ponies, petted the little animals, bounced and bounced on the bounce houses and were in awe of the woman making animals out of balloons.  I know that we were crowded and I thank each one of you for your patience and good sense of humor. There were lines everywhere but everyone that I saw was smiling.

Thank you again and again for making this a tremendous success!!!!

Now - on to this week...

Chef  Cathy Zeis will be here about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 19 to do cooking demonstrations using the blueberries and blackberries.  We will set everything up so that you can watch her prep, cook and then ask her all the questions that might come up.  Cathy has brought some of her wonderful salsas for us to sell and we are also selling her cookbook.  She will be happy to sign it for you while you are here.  You may have already bought one at one of the bookstores.  If you have one, bring it with you and she will personalize it for you.

Saturday, June 21 is our annual Western Day.  Alan and Diane Thompson will be rolling up here late Friday with their authentic chuck wagon!.  They will be serving breakfast on Saturday morning from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  How does a breakfast of fresh picked blueberry pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee sound to you?  The charge is $12 per person.  Any child 4 years old and younger get to eat free of charge.  Tickets bought in advance are $10 a person.  All you need to do is to call me (903) 564-6228, leave your name and phone number and I will call you back.  Alan and Diane will also offer beef brisket sandwiches for lunch.

In addition to the chuck wagon breakfast, we will have Lanny Joe Burnett and his gang.  Lanny sings, tell tall tales (western, of course) and writes poetry.  Bring your yard chairs or blankets to sit on.  The entertainment is open to everyone.  I know that you will want to be here whether you eat breakfast with us or not.

The Mendoza served wonderful food this past Saturday.  Everyone was so impressed.  Pearce and I (and lots of other people) ate breakfast burritos early in the day and then had quesadilla for lunch.  Everything was so good – my real favorite is their “green sauce”.   I think that I could eat it with breakfast, lunch and dinner each day.  (It’s really not that hot).  We are so fortunate to have them every Saturday!

We still have lots of berries left-

There should be blackberries for another 2 or 3 weeks.  ONCE AGAIN…. If you want to get blackberries, you must be here between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. to start picking.  The ripe blackberries are always picked out by 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.  You can pick blueberries all day.  We should have blueberries thru mid-July.

DON’T FORGET….

We are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.  We are closed on Monday and Friday.  The cost of a bucket of berries (a little over a gallon) is $12 per level bucket.  Our minimum charge is $6 per bucket for half a bucket or less.

The blueberry lemonade, the popcorn and ice cream have been very popular this summer.  We are so glad that you are enjoying everything.

When you come to pick berries, please, please come early since it’s cooler then.  Do bring sun screen and a big hat to shade your face.  I would also suggest that you bring an ice chest (or cooler) with you to put your berries in for the trip home.  By the way, we do have ice for sale.

Click for recipes...I am sending you 3 great recipes with this newsletter.  (As always, just click on the 'Lady Chef' at left to link to the recipes on our website.) The first one is our favorite summer dessert – Bumbleberry Cobbler.  We love it and I know that you will too.  It’s also time to pick (or buy) fresh peaches so I am sending you the winning Peach Cobbler recipe from the Ruston Louisiana Peach Festival.  Now that it is summertime salad season and I have a recipe for a wonderful Creamy Lemon Dressing.  Enjoy!!

Do you have a special recipe that you would like to share with everyone?  If you do, please send it to me at info@txberry.com.  I am always looking for more recipes to add to the Berry Patch collection.

Take care of yourselves and come see us soon.

Hugs –

P.S. When you call and leave a message, please repeat your name and phone number twice and remember to talk slowly.  Be sure that you leave your area code also.  I have had several calls that I could not return because I couldn’t understand the number or because whoever left the message didn’t leave a complete phone number.  It is very important to me that I return each and every call.  We will always return you call if we have the necessary information!
