News and Recipes From the Farm

Hello Again!

If you get a chance, please pray for rain.  Last year we were having floods and this year we are looking for any gray, rainy looking clouds.  Feast or famine….like always in farming.

My goodness, haven’t we been having fun?!  The children really had a great time  playing during our Family Day on the 14th! And Mom and Dad tapped their toes in time to Lanny Joe’s wonderful western and gospel music last for our Western Day held last Saturday.

Everybody has enjoyed the wonderful food that Quesadilla Mendoza has been fixing for all of us.  I know that Pearce and I really look forward to their being here every Saturday.  I tried one of their watermelon drinks last Saturday and, while I don’t like it as well as I like our blueberry lemonade, it was really good and certainly refreshing.

The next couple of weeks will be the peak time for the blackberries and the blueberries.  My suggestion to everyone is that you come early in the day.  Yes – we are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. but it is starting to get very hot and we are beginning to see some people in distress when they get too warm (I don’t think that warm is the correct word – blistering hot might be better).  I recommend that you come out before noon and try to finish up by 1:30 p.m.  Please don’t bring your little ones out at 2 p.m.  I have seen so many tiny children with bright red faces and arms.  They really don’t need to be in the sun for very long at that time of day.  (Just a grandmother’s opinion).

Let me tell you a little about what we have planned for you the next two Saturdays...

Saturday, June 28th is 'Education Day'.

We have three wonderful programs for you to enjoy.  Andrea Offner, the Director of the Birdsong Center, will offer a lively talk about some of our feathered friends that are common to the Prairies and Cross Timbers Eco-region.  Find out how to attract them to your yards.  Hands-on activities (small charge for supplies if you want to participate – no charge if you don’t) and live music will be included.  All ages are welcome!  This class is For the Birds! 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. You can enjoy a presentation called Wildscaping for Butterflies!  You will certainly enjoy Andrea’s unique way of teaching folks about the best ways to entice "living flowers" into your yards.  Hands-on activities (small charge for supplies if you want to participate – no charge if you don’t) and live music will be included.  This program is for the young and the young at heart.

From 11 a.m. to noon, Bob Collins, a dear friend of ours and an expert in military history, will present a program on The Battle of Bull Run.  Bob will be bringing many things to show you and will set off black powder in a pan so that everyone can see what they used before there were actual shells to use in guns.  This should be a really fun program and we want you to come with lots of questions for him to answer.

Saturday, July 5th is our 3rd Annual Red, White and Blueberry Festival

As you know, the festival is for the benefit of the Sadler Volunteer Fire Department.  This year we are trying to help them get 3 door openers with keyed entry pads and the fire department needs help with paying for their fuel since, as all of you know, the price has gone up to something ridiculous.  The firemen and their wives will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers, our blueberry lemonade and cold drinks.  They are planning some fun games but I have no clue what they are.

Also, plans are to have a fire truck out here for the kids to climb on (unless it is needed at a fire – of course) .

The berries are so beautiful this year.  We anticipate having blackberries thru Saturday, July 5th and having blueberries up to the middle of July.  We have a larger supply of berries on Tuesday and Saturday since we are closed on Monday and Friday.  So far, we have had plenty of berries on Wednesday and Thursday.  Because we have such large crowds on Saturday, the berries for Sunday can be a little scarce.  Don’t forget that we are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We are having such a good time this year and, from all of the comments, I know that you are having fun also.  The complaints this year have been few and far between.  I can pretty well judge the season from that.

Click for recipes....I still need more new recipes.  If you have a recipe that you want to share, please send it to me at info@txberry.com.  Since it has gotten so hot, it’s time for cool salads.  Here are two that are among our favorites – Blueberry Banana Salad and Blueberry & Tortellini Fruit Salad.  These really are delicious.
