News and Recipes From the Farm

Just wanted to let everyone on to a few things going on at The Berry Patch.

As of today, Thursday, July 3, the blackberries are gone.  They have been wonderful this year.  Many of you have come several times and now have 3 or 4 gallons of blackberries in your freezer.  We are glad that you enjoy them.

It looks like the blueberries are going to run out about a week earlier that we had planned.  I have people here this morning complaining because they are not finding as many berries as they hoped to find.  There are still some berries left to ripen and I know that we will have some on Saturday morning, July 5th.  It’s sad but all good things must come to an end.

I know that it is a bit late to tell you, but we finally have our honey.  They brought it to us today.  Here is what we have:

Honey Options
1 lb. honey     $ 7.00
3 lbs. honey        $15.00
1 lb. honey w/comb       Sorry - already
Sold Out
3 lbs. honey w/comb     Sorry - already
Sold Out

Why don’t you come out this Saturday for blueberry picking, enjoy the Red, White and Blueberry Festival and pick up your honey?!

We don't know if there will be any honey left or not - it is selling so fast. Before we could even get this newsletter out to you, we already SOLD OUT of the honey w/comb items. But the Festival will still be a great fun thing! As most of you know from our past newsletters, the Festival is a benefit for the Sadler Volunteer Fire Department and they are planning to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for you.  We are donating our blueberry lemonade to them for the day and they will be setting up games to play.  They are such a blessing to our community.  It is amazing how so few people can do so much good.

We are going to close the Berry Patch at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12th.

There will be some berries next week but not a great many.  I have had several people ask me if the next crop of berries would be ready in August and I had one ask me when we were going to get more plants so that there would be enough berries.  The answer to the first question is that berries (and fruit trees) only bloom one time a year and when the fruit is gone there won’t be any more until the next year.  The answer to the second question is that we don’t have any more room to plant any more blueberry plants.  Some die every year and every year we replace those.  I know that you have noticed how much the blueberries have grown.  That means more berries but, then again, we have more people coming to the farm.

To keep all of you posted on everything…..

We have at least 4 potential buyers for the farm…but no contract yet.  It wouldn’t matter which one ends up buying Bailey’s Berry Patch, they are all younger that we are and plan to continue with the farm and even expand it.

It has been our pleasure to have all of you here this summer.  The way that Pearce and I have always thought of the Berry Patch is that this is our home and you are welcome and invited guests.  With a few exceptions, most people have acted like guests.  Thank you….

Click for recipesHere are three new recipes for this newsletter.  I tried to find recipes that might be new to you and that contained honey.  The first one is for a Honey Blueberry Spread.  That sounds good – combining blueberries and honey.  The second recipe is for Black Pepper – Honey Steak (yum!) and the third one is for Balsamic Honey-Glazed Salmon. (Pearce doesn’t like salmon – but I do – a lot.) Click HERE for recipes.

Take care of yourselves if you can’t make it back.  Thank you for your wonderful e-mails, pictures, recipes, etc.

Hugs –
