News and Recipes From the Farm

It's starting to feel a lot like fall!

The weather lately has been wonderful.  The cooler temperatures have everything looking so nice.  We certainly have appreciated all of the gentle rain that we have received.  Pearce and I have been working on our fall garden.  Our fall tomatoes are in and I have planted “bright lights” chard, curly kale, broccoli raab and (regular) broccoli.  The spinach and winter romaine lettuce will go into a bed in about a month.  We have beautiful raised beds and they are so easy to work with.  This year we have filled them with the rich compost that we have gotten from Nathan and Kevin Bruce, owners of North Texas Organics.  I replanted three flower beds with perennials today and used the compost in them.  As you can tell, I am really impressed with the way that the compost works into the beds.  I can tell that it is really working by looking at the fall tomatoes that we planted a month ago.

You certainly don’t want to miss the program on Saturday, September 12th, that North Texas Organics is going to put on here at the farm.  The program will be on organic fertilizer, organic composting and vermicomposting (composting using red worms).  Registration (donuts and coffee) will start at 9:30 am.  The program will begin at 10 am and will end at 2 pm.  There will be a break for lunch sometime around noon.  The cost of the seminar even includes lunch.  We are charging $20 a person if you register in advance and $25 a person if you wait until you get here on the day of the program.  If you want to register early, you may call me at (903) 564-6228 or you may send me an email at either txberry@netzero.com or info@txberry.com.  We take either checks or credit cards.  This is a very special program that I know you will enjoy.  Nathan and Kevin will give you lots of tips that you will be able to put to use immediately.  Sara Fusche from North Central Texas College in Gainesville will be assisting with all of the demonstrations.  Sara teaches composting and environmental education at the college.  Nathan and Kevin will have their compost, vermicompost and home kits with worms here for you to purchase if you are interested.  There will be plenty of time for you to ask all of the questions that you have and get the answers that you will need.

GATHER YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS AND BRING THEM WITH YOU.  THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ENJOY WORKING IN YOUR YARDS OR WHO ENJOY HAVING YOUR OWN PERSONAL GARDEN AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT RAISING YOUR FOOD ORGANICALLY.

I am sure that you have noticed that the “experts” (ha!) are saying that this recession or whatever you want to call it is beginning to end.  The housing market is coming back and financing is finally beginning to ease.

Bailey’s Berry Patch is still for sale.  We have a number of people who have told us that they are interested in the farm BUT we don’t have a contract yet.  Because of our age and health, we really do need to sell and because of this and the fact that there is not a real estate agent involved, we have reduced the price of the farm.

Pearce and I have decided to host an open house on Saturday, October 24th, for anyone interested in the farm.  The open house will start at 10 am and will end at 4 pm.  If you are interested or if you have family and friends that are interested, please try to come to our open house that day.  We are happy to show the farm any day if you cannot make it on the 24th.

Enjoy the fall!  This is my favorite time of the year. the persimmons will be ready for picking soon and I will let you know when you can come and get them.  They are promising to be really “yummy” again this year.

I’ll send you another note soon.

Hugs –
